Project Educate: An Interview with Kiss-the-Iconist
Kiss-the-Iconist is one of the most active people in the community and has an extremely varied, but beautiful icon-gallery, ranging from the Smurfs to Mario.
For this reason, she is one of the inspiring iconists that were interviewed for the Icons & Handhelds-week.
How long have you been active as an iconist and what was it that first drew you towards the community and art form?
I’ve started making icons during my second year on deviantart in the year 2007. I had a much older account before I made this account back then. But I don’t use my old account anymore after 2008, I decided to create a second account for my icons and pixels. I’ve deleted a whole bunch of old icons; I cannot remember which one of my very first was. But here’s one that I have made almost years ago for my old account, KawaiiKittee88.
What do you draw inspiration from?
Cartoons, other famous artists… But mostly I got the inspiration from watching old and new animation. I grew up watching cartoons, and I am proud of who I am. No one cannot change what I enjoy very much. Without that inspiration, I don’t know what would have become of me.
What are your tools when creating art?
Do you have tips to give or tricks to share for the particular programs you might use that could help beginners out?
I normally use MSPaint to make my pixels/ icons. For when I want to animate or transparent pixels, I use this program which is a free trial. And I highly recommend ordering the full version. I’ve been using this program known as Easy Gif Animator for 5 years now. [link]
I don’t have much to explain for tips, but when I animate the frames, I just make an additional frame of the same pixel with different animation or movements of a character as I go along in Paint and/or Easy Gif.
Who is your "idol" within the community and why?
Oh man…. There’s so many; I can’t describe all of them!
Well, one of the first people I knew who made not just icons, but really amazing art. And that person is *angelishi! She’s an amazing artist/ iconist and good friend as well. I feel as if I’m not worthy to be just as good as she is. Haha! She amazes me so much; she’s one of the first people who inspired me to make icons!
Alongside was another deviant, ~Kiomika, who isn’t on here anymore, but she provided a really awesome base called ‘Kioicons’. Here’s an example of what the base looks like.
Thank you!
